BETH HART "Leave the Light On"
Koch Entertainment Real Rock Magazine - Posted January 26, 2004
"Beth Hart is a breath of fresh air in the music industry today. We have the "pop" icons that claim their fame on picture perfect bodies and hair and, oh yeah, they can dance ...but what about the "voice" when did the industry stop caring about vocal talent? If you ask me... far too long ago. Beth Hart's new album "Leave The Light On" which was released on October 21, 2003 on Koch Records is sensational! When I finished listening to Beth Hart new album I just sat back and thought, "Wow".. "What a powerful and emotional voice", I had chills running down my spine. Beth's voice draws you in and speaks to you on a personal level there is no emotion left unfelt. I don't know many singers that leave you feeling so many "feelings".
The title track, "Leave The Light On" tells a story, of a woman who has been abused, turns the abuse inward and the struggles to overcome being a victim. Beth's voice is sensitive and delivers the song with passion. Track 7 "Lifetime" is an anthem to those whose life has been hard, to encourage a positive change, "It's no way to live a lifetime" "no way to live at all". I am sure some of us can relate to the message in this song. The 10th track "Sky Full Of Clover" has a gospel/blues tone to it and in my opinion the most powerful song on the album.
The rest of the album showcases the vocal talent of Beth Hart's "voice" finally a singer with a "voice"! Beth's vocal style is reminiscent of Janis Joplin mixed with Patsy Cline's chilling and haunting voice...what a mixture! Beth Hart will surely stir your emotions as you "feel" her emotions in each track on the album. Do I have a favorite? Yes...all of them, each one has it's own unique flavor. Don't take my word for it, buy the album and form your own opinion. |

Beth Hart
Pulse Weekly 15. December 3, 2003
Decorated with tatoos, wild hair and seductive eyes, singer/songwriter Beth Hart looks nothing like what you would expect from the woman who's singing out her soul on "Leave The Light On" her comeback album after a four-years hiatus. With a raspy, soulful, voice reminiscent of Macy Gray, Hart tells stories of her triumph over addiction and abuse with the help of her higher power. This album blends bluesy rocks with gospel feeling, complete with a little bit of attitude and raw emotion.
This isn't your run of the mill preachy, bible-thumper album. With lyrics like, "I don't listen to the rules or gospel/They're just trying to shut me out" Hart definitely marches to her own tune. The lyrics are a vital storybook of Hart's struggles as a woman, addressing with issues of security, intimacy and even alcoholism.

Beth Hart Leave the Light On (Koch)
Rolling Stone Review
For Beth Hart, making music has always been the eye of an otherwise stormy life. But following an arrest and rehab, she's never looked healthier . . . or sounded more passionate.
On her third full-length, Leave the Light On, Hart is a soulful mythologizer of her own self-destruction; the Janis Joplin sound-a-like mixing American roots forms with classic rock into bloodletting songs with mainstream pop appeal.
On the title track, the twenty-nine-year old sings "Can the damage be undone? I swore to God I'd never be what I've become . . ." And on an upbeat Black Crowes-style shuffle, she remarks, "I'm just dirty footprints at your door."
The record has its lusty and celebratory moments too, and of course plenty of catharsis to offer Adult Pop radio programmers who jumped on her 1999 raw-nerve hit "L.A. Song." (TODD SPENCER) |

BETH HART'S NEW SINGLE LIGHTS UP CBS-TV DAYTIME LINEUP!
"Leave the Light On" serves as soundtrack for network-wide ad campaign. October 17, 2003
Los Angeles, CA -- Though it may seem a bit like an example of life imitating art, singer/songwriter Beth Hart's rough-and-tumble melodies really are the perfect accompaniment for a soap opera. In a spotlight article, BILLBOARD effusively praised her "raw, profoundly personal songs [that] reveal the tortured soul of a woman who has been to hell and back more than once," while a recent cover story in MUSIC CONNECTION magazine noted that her "songs have a sense of hope and vulnerability expressed by lyrics that vividly articulate her struggles -- and desire for redemption." So it's entirely fitting that "Leave the Light On," the first single from her upcoming Koch Records CD, also titled LEAVE THE LIGHT ON, serves as the soundtrack for a new promotional campaign for CBS-TV's four daytime dramas: THE YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS, THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL, AS THE WORLD TURNS and GUIDING LIGHT. Portions of the tune, along with scenes from the TV shows and, in some ads, images from the artist's music video, accompany various 20- and 30-second spots marketing the network's afternoon lineup. Hart's new album, LEAVE THE LIGHT ON, is scheduled to hit record stores on October 21st.
All eleven tracks on LEAVE THE LIGHT ON palpably explore the raw emotion and personal demons that have played a defining role in Hart's life. From the gritty introspection of "Leave the Light On" and the dark intensity of "Lay Your Hands On Me" to the Gospel-infused joy of "Sky Full of Clover," LEAVE THE LIGHT ON is a down-to-earth yet deeply affecting expression of Hart's freshly reawakened passion for life, love and music.

Beth Hart
and Fabrice Morvan
at Club Lingerie
Hits Daily Double. Aug 22, 2003
It was second-chance night in Hollywood at the venerable Sunset Blvd. venue, which was also getting its second wind. Hart and Morvan, both of whom have been through the industry wars and lived to tell about it, joined forces in an inspiring night celebrating perseverance and survival, no mean feats in these tremulous times. The sassy Hart was last seen about four years ago, when her Atlantic bow produced the 1999 hit, L.A. Song, but drug addiction effectively cut short that promise. She's clean a year now, and inked to indie Koch, which will release her follow-up, Leave the Light On, Oct. 21. A powerful presence who gave her all to the adoring crowd, Hart has been totally up front about her travails, calling herself the poster child for rehab before launching into the searing, Joplin-esque Monkey Back, which not only describes the pangs of addiction but acts it out in no uncertain terms. The mere fact that Hart (managed by true believer and longtime Cyndi Lauper mate David Wolff) has been able to come back with this kind of fire in her belly is something that can warm the heart of even the most cynical observer. Similarly, Morvans ongoing comeback turned electric with this gig. The onetime Milli Vanilli member metamorphosed into a combo of the young Michael Jackson, Terence Trent DArby, Maxwell and Mick Jagger (on the rocking, Gimme Shelter-styled title track to his indie album, Love Revolution, which ended with Fabrice shivering like James Brown). Strumming an acoustic guitar for the traditional Redemption Song finale, the afrod Fabrice evokes not only the spirit but the image of Bob Marley, transcending the suffering he's gone through and coming out the other end. Its almost enough to make you believe in a higher power, one that rights wrongs and rewards goodness. If Morvans success meant nothing more than a hearty up yours to the industry that had royally screwed him, it would be enough. RT |

LEAVE THE LIGHT ON ... BETH HART IS COMIN' BACK!
Press Release
August 4, 2003
Singer of legendary "L.A. Song" returns after four-year silence
Los Angeles, CA -- A few years ago, critics and radio programmers throughout the country were captivated by Beth Hart, with Billboard proclaiming that her "voice and lyrical wisdom are like red stripes painted across a black wall ... Hart's got the stuff of icons." Yet soon after the success of her 1999 hit, "L.A. Song," she seemingly disappeared from the music scene. Now, the celebrated singer has returned with her most revealing and personal recording to date. On October 21th, KOCH Records will release Hart's long-awaited follow-up album, LEAVE THE LIGHT ON, with the first single, also titled "Leave the Light On," shipping to radio on August 25th.
"The songs talk about getting well, and also about the darkness of being down and then the light of being back in the living again," explains Hart, alluding to the substance abuse problems that disrupted her career. "To have gotten the chance to make this record, and especially to have completed it, was like, 'Wow, you got back in the game, and you went for it!' I thought I'd really blown the opportunity to ever do that again."
Produced by Oliver Leiber, "Leave the Light On" is one of eleven tunes on the album that palpably explore the raw emotion and personal demons that have played a defining role in Hart's life. From the gritty introspection of "Leave the Light On" and the dark intensity of "Lay Your Hands On Me" to the Gospel-infused joy of "Sky Full of Clover," LEAVE THE LIGHT ON is a down-to-earth yet deeply affecting expression of Hart's newly rekindled passion for life, love and music.
